Frequently Asked Questions

An Interview with Pastor Bill Teng and Pastor Holly Davis

WHERE IS HERITAGE PRESBYTERIAN LOCATED?

Heritage is located in the heart of the Fort Hunt neighborhood on land that was formerly part of George Washington's plantation. Our address is 8503 Fort Hunt Road, Alexandria, Virginia 22308. For specific directions from your home, please see our Directions page.

WHAT ACCOMMODATIONS DO YOU PROVIDE FOR THE DISABLED?

There are several handicapped parking spaces directly in front of our church with easy access to our entrance for those in wheelchairs. Hearing devices for our Worship service are available for those who are hearing impaired. Our Ushers will be at the entrances and available to help you in any way – just ask if you need their assistance.

WHAT TIME IS SUNDAY SCHOOL? DO YOU PROVIDE CHILDCARE?

Our Sunday School classes for ages 4-100 begin at 9:30 am and conclude at 10:30 am. And, yes, we provide childcare in our nursery beginning at 9:30 am as well. Some classes are held in the evenings, and we also have a vibrant Youth Group. Take a look at the complete listing of all our Christian Education opportunities to see what might interest you.

WHAT TIME IS WORSHIP?

Heritage begins Worship in the Sanctuary at 10:55 am. Ushers are available at both entrances to provide you with a Visitors Guide and Worship Bulletin as well as to assist you with any needs you may have. During the months of July and August, we also hold an Outdoor Worship service in our butterfly garden from 9:00-9:45 am that is "come as you are."

IS IT OKAY FOR MY KIDS TO STAY WITH ME IN WORSHIP?

We all know that kids get the wiggles during Worship. It's okay! We want you to know that you and the kids have options. But let's be clear -- children are always welcome to stay with their parents during Worship. You know your child best, and some have more difficulty than others separating from mom and dad.

During Worship, our nursery remains open for children under 4. For those 4 years old through 3rd grade, there is a "Children's Time" segment when kids will be invited to the front of the church for some time with one of us Pastors or a member of our congregation. After that, children may return to their parents or they may go to Children in Worship. During Children in Worship, the kids are invited to Rooms 1&2 for an age-appropriate Worship experience. This gentle introduction to the structure of Worship teaches Bible stories through drama, games, and arts and crafts. The children are also introduced to the concept of mission as they participate in service projects each quarter during their time in Children in Worship.

WHEN DO YOU HAVE COMMUNION AND WHO IS ALLOWED TO PARTAKE?

Holy Communion is celebrated on the first Sunday of each month. The Communion table is open to all who are professed Christians.

During our Outdoor Worship services in July and August, Holy Communion is celebrated each Sunday through intinction.

WHAT MUSICAL OPPORTUNITIES DO YOU HAVE?

Heritage is blessed with a wonderful music ministry! Led by our Musical Director, Jeff Taylor, we have choirs as well as handbell and handchime ensembles. Each February and September we host the popular Worshipful Jazz Sunday that is a must for everyone to attend. We also hold concerts in our SUNDAYS@Heritage series several times a year.

HOW DO I MAKE A PRAYER REQUEST?

If you are with us in Worship, you'll see the yellow cards in your pew. Fill out your prayer request and place it in the offering plate when it comes to you. If you're unable to be at church, you can still make a prayer request by emailing Pastor Teng at pastor@heritagechurchva.org or by calling (703)360-9546.

HOW DO I BECOME A MEMBER?

We welcome your membership at Heritage! You may unite with us in one of three ways: by profession of faith and baptism; by reaffirmation of faith; or by transfer from another congregation. Sound confusing? Don't worry. As Pastors here, we hold an Inquirers Class periodically for those showing an interest in membership, and it provides all the information you need. We also hold a Confirmation Class for the youth at least every other year. Please speak to either Pastor if you are interested.

HOW WILL I GET TO KNOW EVERYONE? WHAT SORT OF FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITIES DO YOU HAVE?

There are so many ways for you to participate and make friends here at Heritage! Each Sunday, immediately following Worship, we convene to our Fellowship Hall for coffee, refreshments and an opportunity to get caught up with each other. It's a great way to meet the members of our congregation, and we encourage you to attend. We are currently planning many activities surrounding the 50th anniversary of our church, culminating in April 2012. Other ways to participate on a regular basis include: Men's Fellowship Breakfast, Heritage Presbyterian Women (HPW) Circles, HPW Made by the Bell Crafters, Lunch Bunch, Exercise Class, Annual Picnic, Annual Soup Luncheon, Progressive Dinner, Fall Fest, HPW Puppet Show, SUNDAYS@Heritage concerts, and many more!
